Sanctuary Communities Newsletter

Hello friends and hello spring (for sure, this time):

We should have known we'd have the last storm of winter this last week, since this was the week we planned to have water flowing in our Market Square fountain. Sure enough, after a weekend that flirted with 70-degree temperatures on gloriously sunny days, we got a two-day taste of the departing season; which makes the coming weeks of spring weather all the more welcome!

The weekend weather did allow us to wedge in what we intend to be the first of many open-air dinners on the Square. Even with just one house up, we already have a neighborhood in the making. A couple dozen well-wishers, some of them planning to be future Village residents, answered our invitation to help us christen the Square with a potluck dinner under the stars. It was everything we expected.

Our contention throughout our dreaming and planning for Sanctuary Village was that a community was waiting for us to shape the right space to host it. Our Saturday night potluck gave us a taste (quite literally) of what that will feel like. It was a do-it-yourself community gathering. Given that many of our friends trace their origins -- or their affections -- to Spain and Latin America, a Spanish theme evolved. The main course was paella, with a table full of side dishes and deserts to compliment the seafood and rice. There were sangria and a couple batches of mojitos. Some folks even brought their favorite Latino tunes to provide the evening's sidetrack. Everybody contributed something, which is a pretty good description of a healthy neighborhood, even when the homes themselves are still on the to-do list.

Sitting there with so many friends on such a delightful evening, it was easy to visualize the Square filled in, with the little restaurant and shops spilling customers out into the Square and residents strolling by for glasses of sangria and conversation. We lifted glasses to that vision Saturday night: To our new neighborhood and our future neighbors. To you.

We're making plans for our next gathering on the Square on May 23, our first annual Spring Fling. We hope you're in range and can join us for that event. Its Memorial Day weekend, with all sorts of festivities within walking distance on Franklin's Main Street. In our next newsletter, we'll supply more details.

In the meantime, we're working to make it easy for those of you who know you want to join us in growing Sanctuary Village. We're broadening the range of house designs in our first phase and creating new home and lot packages. Shoot us an email with questions, or call me directly. And if you're in the area before Memorial Day and want a look at the Square, our Idea Home, and the plan for Phase 1, call for an appointment.

Happy spring
